Kate Wheeler
A Rochester native, Ms. Wheeler received her BFA in Fine Art and Art History from the Columbus College of Art and Design. She currently resides in Rochester, where she is the Director of Tours, Publicist, and Assistant Curator at ARTISANworks. Kate is also a member of the Ballet Faculty at the Hochstein School of Music and Dance. She has directed dance and art workshops across the region in conjunction with local school districts and with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra.
Ms. Wheeler’s work has a strong focus on movement and body language. Her larger paintings, completed with oils and acrylics, depict the dialogue of the dancer and the artist through the character of her mark-making. She is fascinated by the perpetually mobile conversation that emerges from a dance, and believes that it is similar to the evolution of ideas an artist presents upon the canvas: both finished pieces reflect not only their immediate subjects, but the character and mood of those who created them. Kate also enjoys portraiture and the narratives that emerge from costuming and posture. She enjoys experimenting with metal-point drawing and egg tempera.
