Artisan Works Sponsors a Line of Rare Contemporary Wood Furniture
(View all Press Releases | Print this Page)
Local woodworker Paul Hoffman has teamed with Artisan Works for the creation of his new line of Contemporary Victorian Furniture. Every couple of weeks, the Rochester native transports a magnificent new piece to the exhibit space and works with Louis Perticone on its installation.

Hoffman’s work has a delicate yet heavy sensitivity, using the unaltered anatomy of individual wood pieces to create a polished, human-like finish. The pores and crags in the wood have the substance of flesh; table legs and chair seats reflect the smooth musculature of the great trees from which the stock came.
One of his featured pieces, a conversation bench, curves softly and naturally, so that one individual may sit on one side of its curve, and the other on its counterpart. It’s difficult to discern between what is nature formed, and what is a result the hand of the craftsman. Hoffman forms his pieces from exotic woods such as Purple Heart, Zircote (native of Belize) and East Indian Rose Wood.
Hoffman has been showing his work at the Artisan Works space for several years. It can be viewed in almost all of the spaces in the building. His latest body of work is inspired by the regality of Victorian era furniture and infuses his contemporary and naturalist organic finish.
