The Body in Abstract: a photographic study of the human landscape by Richard Quataert

(View all Press Releases | Print this Page)

For over almost fifteen years, ARTISANworks senior curator Richard Quataert has forged a relationship with the organization’s guests by not only designing exhibits, but by displaying some of his fine art photography along the maze of gallery walls.

Quataert, a former Kodak employee, worked through the ranks of the Photographic Training Department to become a Producer/Director in the Motion Picture Department. A lengthy involvement with different photographic media led him to his primary concentration on fine art still photography.

The Body in Abstract features black and white photographs of human anatomy. They are presented as abstract sand-scapes of skin, revealing rivulets of age and wear, or the smooth marbled polish of youth. Quataert began photographing the full human figure in gestures that mimic landscape and natural form, until eventually the focus of his lense tightened on the mysterious and sometimes unidentifiable curvatures of the body. All of the images in The Body in Abstract were taken in the Marilyn Monroe Room at ARTISANworks, where many of his early figurative photographs are displayed. The film was processed in the ARTISANworks darkroom.

Artisan Works and Richard Quataert would like to invite the community to share in his creative process. The Body in Abstract exhibit will open on Sunday, March 1st in the Workshop Hallway. The reception will include light refreshments and live music. The photographer will be present to answer any questions about his work.
